Vintage Watergate Hotel Ashtray and Matchbook
Vintage ashtray and matchbook from the Watergate Hotel in Washington, D.C., sold seperately.
The ashtray is made of pewter and can hold 5 cigarettes. The top is embossed with hotel's name, city and a large "W" on top of a black background. The bottom is stamped "Artograph" and "Riverdale MD." There are three ashtrays available, all in excellent vintage condition with no visible chips or scratches. Each measures 4 inches in diameter x .5 inches tall.
There are also three matchbook's available. Two matchbooks are to the Watergate Hotel (one used and one lightly used with a single match missing), and one is to the Watergate Terrace event space (unused). The front of the hotel matchbook reads "Watergate Hotel" with the "W" logo above it, and the back boasts "the preferred hotel in the nation's capital." The Watergate Terrace matchbook's front showcases the event space's name and contact information. Inside, it reads "banquet facilities for weddings, receptions, meetings." The back of the matchbook promote's the facility's pastry business.
The Watergate Hotel is famously known for one of the greatest scandals in American politics. In 1972, five intruders were caught in the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee, leading to Richard Nixon’s resignation from the presidency. They had used room 214 in the Watergate Hotel as their home base, forever tying the hotel to the scandal.
