Vintage Americana of Bal Harbour Hotel Ashtray and Matchbook
Vintage ashtray and matchbook from the Americana Hotel in Bal Harbour, Miami Beach, Florida, sold seperately.
The glass ashtray reads "Americana of Bal Harbour" in white ink with a globe above the hotel's wordmark. There are 3 ashtrays available. Two are in good vintage condition with small chips along the inner rim. One ashtray is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or scratches. Each ashtray measures 3.75 inches in diameter x .75 inches tall.
The matchbook has a retro gold and white background. Its front is overlaid with "Americana" on top of a globe. Above the globe reads "the hotel of the Americas" and below reads "Bal Harbour / Miami Beach / Florida." Inside promotes the resort's amenities - "a 475-room oceanfront estate, completely air conditioned, 10 acres of gardens, magnificent pool and cabana area, 600-foot panorama of ocean beach, Bal Masque Supper Club, Medallion Dining Room, Gaucho Steak House, Carioca Lounge, Starlite Pati, Dominion Coffee House." The back boasts "daring in concept, the ultimate in taste."
The Americana Hotel opened in December 1956, and on its opening day commanded the unheard of rate of $32 per day. The hotel was designed by famed Miami Beach architect Morris Lapidus who had just completed the Fontainebleau and Eden Roc hotels further down in Miami Beach.
The Bal Harbour Shops would be built in 1965, beginning the village’s transition to a world-class shopping destination. The Americana benefited immensely from its location right across the street from the Shops, and today, it is home to the St. Regis Resort & Residences.
